Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) has developed a unique system of independent forest certification and product labeling, helping consumers identify timber and products from responsibly managed forests. FSC is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization established in 1993.

What is Forest certification?

Forest certification is the process of inspecting forests to assess their management according to an agreed set of principles and criteria. These principles include recognition of indigenous peoples' rights, long term economic viability and protection of wildlife and so on. A wide range of forests have already been certified. The FSC logo shows that the timber comes from responsibly managed forests. More FSC products mean that more FSC certified forests are being managed for the long-term well being of people and the planet.

How does it work?

Forest Management (FM) Certification - FSC has developed ten Principles and 56 Criteria, those define good management of forests. These principles can be applied to any forests around the world. Forests owned by various owners such as individual foresters, forest associations, companies, local governments, and NPOs have been received FSC certification. Various types of forest were certified from 100ha to one million ha.

Chain of Custody (COC) Certification - Chain of Custody certification allows companies to label their FSC certified products, which in turn enables consumers to identify and choose products that support responsible forest management. FSC Chain of Custody certification verifies that FSC certified material is identified or kept segregated from non-certified material through this chain.
